What can I obsess on over the next 18 months
that will creatively fulfill me?
So many times I hear people around me obsess about, “What do I want to do for the rest of my life?” It seems to be a paralyzing topic for many people, oftentimes, including myself. I know what the legacy I want to leave behind is, but the amount of trails that can be walked to get to that legacy is abundantly overwhelming!
So…let’s find a role model to help us with this one:
COO of Facebook, Sheryl Sandberg’s recent book, Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead, has made its way onto my nightstand. Multiple ladies brought the book up in conversations with me and from what they said, it grabbed my attention.
“I believe everyone should have a long-term dream,” Sandberg writes; however, she emphasizes the need to have an 18-month plan to pursue immediate goals, like learning new skills.
So… Stop for a second. Instead of obsessing about the next 5 to 10 years, let’s just figure out what we would like to accomplish in the next 18 months. I LOVE this idea.
If you focus on the confusion, the noise and the guilt from not having a 5 and 10 year plan, then you will have a whole lot of confusion, noise and guilt for the next 5 to 10 years…
Focus on a few things you would like to accomplish over the next 18 months. That’s tangible. Focus on things that make you creatively happy. Focus on things that will get you closer to what you want right now in your life.
Doing something extremely diligently for 18 months is way more powerful than worrying about nothing forever.
